Trademark Registration in Turkey: The Application Process

A trademark identifies the commercial origin of goods or services. A business name, logo or other distinctive sign may be considered for registration with the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, TÜRKPATENT. Registration planning should begin before packaging, advertising and distribution commitments make a change of name expensive.

Start with the sign and its intended use

Prepare the exact word or logo you want to protect and list the products and services offered under it. A company registration, domain name or social media account does not replace a trademark application. Searches for identical and similar signs help identify potential conflicts, but an apparently clear search cannot guarantee acceptance.

From application to registration

The application identifies the owner, the sign and the goods and services. TÜRKPATENT checks the file and applicable grounds for refusal. Publication allows earlier rights holders to raise objections. Notifications, responses and registration requirements must be handled within the relevant deadlines. Filing an application and obtaining a registration are separate stages.

Choose a practical scope

Nice classes organise goods and services. The actual wording matters as much as the class number. For example, packaged coffee, café services and retail services address different activities. Selecting only retail services may leave the branded product outside the intended scope. Unnecessary classes increase costs without replacing a considered business plan.

Manage the right after registration

Turkish trademark protection generally runs for ten years from filing and can be renewed for further periods. Keep ownership details, renewal dates and evidence of genuine use organised. Özgel Patent can help review the proposed mark, prepare the scope and follow official communications. Share the brand sample, applicant details and market plans when requesting an initial assessment.
